Liberty Hall Celebrates Centennial Anniversary

To commemorate 100 years of movies, Liberty Hall will reprise its role as an opera house with a special screening of "Phantom of the Opera" accompanied by live piano music.

Liberty Hall first opened as a movie theater in the 1924-1925 season, according to documentation. This year, the hall launched a series to mark its centennial, screening a different 1925 silent movie each month.

October's Selection: "Phantom of the Opera"

The October selection is the 1925 film "Phantom of the Opera," directed by Rupert Julian and starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin. The black-and-white horror film will be enhanced by Liberty Hall's history as the Bowersock Opera House.

Earlier this year, Liberty Hall launched a new series to mark the centennial.

According to the Spencer Research Library, Bowersock renovated the building in 1882 before it burned down in an electrical fire in 1911.
