Alberta is getting new licence plates. The UCP announced a 'tournament-style' online vote to select a new design, replacing the current one from 1984.
The new plate will feature the words 'Strong and Free', adopted as the provincial motto in 1980. This phrase is also part of the UCP's slogan and references the party's Strong and Free Club.
'Strong and Free' will serve as a nod to Canada's national anthem and Alberta's position as a strong and sovereign province within a united Canada.
Previously, 'Wild Rose Country' was on plates from 1974, but was proposed to be removed in 2014, before being reinstated.
The UCP's announcement introduces a new era for Alberta's licence plates, with a design to be chosen by the public.
