Researchers Identify 4 Antiviral Drug Candidates for COVID-19

A team of researchers has identified four potential antiviral drug candidates for COVID-19 after screening over 250,000 drugs and natural compounds.

The goal of the research was to find which compounds stop viral replication the most, as there are currently only three antivirals authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating COVID-19.

Already, the effectiveness of one of the drugs is in question, and another’s efficacy hasn’t yet been pinned down.

The research aimed to find more treatment options in case the SARS-CoV-2 virus develops resistance to existing treatments.

Author's summary: Researchers identify potential COVID-19 treatments.
