Having a structured approach is key to hitting your next running goal. When starting out as a teenager, the concept of training was unclear, with questions like "did you just put one foot ahead of the other every day and … run?"
A training plan, prescribed by a coach, helped build toward the goal of becoming a faster distance racer over the course of the season. Each day featured a specific run or workout, each with its own purpose.
With a plan, it's as easy as checking a box every day, such as completing a Monday threshold workout. Having a goal race or objective in mind provides a sense of direction, like following a light toward the end of the tunnel.
