A reservoir in Colorado Springs has been permanently closed to the public due to health and safety concerns. The South Suburban Reservoir, which is part of the city's drinking water system, was previously open to off-leash dogs and their owners.
The reservoir is too small to dilute pollutants generated by dogs, including over 1,000 lost dog toys. Colorado Springs Utilities, the agency responsible for the reservoir, cited "management challenges, including safety concerns and water quality issues" as the reason for the closure.
"This decision was difficult, but necessary,"
The reservoir was built in 1932 to store drinking water before treatment and is one of two in the 318-acre Stratton Open Space. The closure will remain in effect even after ongoing repairs to the dam are completed.
