Learn to Grow: Beautybush attracts pollinators

One of my favorite shrubs is Beautybush (Kolkwitzia amabilis), a hardy, zone 4, vase-shaped deciduous shrub that provides a plethora of light pink blooms in spring, attracting lots of pollinators.

Native to China, it prefers sun, but does well in partial shade, growing 6-10 feet tall and 4-8 feet wide in almost any soil. Beautybush is basically disease and pest free, and deer resistant.

The bark on older stems peels off, providing winter interest. Use Beautybush as a specimen plant or as a hedge in a place that needs perking up in spring.

Pruning out old stems after flowering will prevent the shrub from becoming overgrown, when renewal pruning to the ground might be necessary. Note that Kolkwitzias bloom on old wood, so severe pruning will minimize flower production the following year.

Consider a Beautybush for your landscape.

Author's summary: Beautybush is a great shrub for pollinators.
