There are over 350 officially recorded white grape varieties in Italy, with the number exceeding 500 when including those beyond the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's list.

Pinot Grigio is cultivated across Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Veneto, making it affordable and easy to find. However, much of what is exported tastes bland, overly sweet, and lacks balanced acidity and fruit.
Sample a top-flight pinot grigio in northern Italy, though, and you’ll taste the difference.
This highlights the need to explore beyond the common pinot grigio wines.
