Relaxation of Environmental Permitting System
The government has introduced a relaxation of the environmental permitting system, aiming to speed up construction of new housing and key infrastructure by reducing bureaucracy and initial holdups for builders.
The Environment Agency will now have the authority to determine which activities are exempt from requiring an environmental permit, making the process quicker and more flexible for low-risk activities.
- Builders may save up to 16 weeks of waiting time by proceeding with projects, conducting site investigations, and installing drainage channels without being held up by permit approval.
- Projects such as solar and onshore windfarms that do not require ongoing operational permits may be constructed without environmental permits, given the right conditions.
