The Kunstmuseum Basel has concluded that Paul Gauguin's final self-portrait is authentic, following an investigation sparked by a researcher's doubts about its attribution.
A researcher specializing in Gauguin, Fabrice Fourmanoir, had alleged that the painting was a fake, created by Nguyen Van Cam, a Vietnamese friend of Gauguin's, in 1916, 13 years after Gauguin's death.
The painting was made by Gauguin, but part of the face was retouched after the artist's death.
The museum's research confirms the authenticity of the self-portrait, although it notes that some retouching was done after Gauguin's death.
Author's summary: Gauguin's last self-portrait is authentic, despite some posthumous retouching.
