However, this narrative was debunked by waves of protests in Jakarta that swiftly spread nationwide, with people speaking out against economic inequality, labour insecurity and political complacency.
A tragic incident occurred on 28 August 2025, when an ojol (ride-hailing motorcycle) driver was crushed by an armoured police vehicle during protests near the parliament compound in Jakarta.
The video of the ojol driver’s death went viral, fostering solidarity among approximately 7 million fellow ojol drivers and marginalised youth nationwide.
Long-term economic solutions are needed to address the root causes of instability.
