Snakes are smarter than most give them credit for, as evident from a new study published in the ecoevorix journal.
The study found that Amazonian snakes, when presented with a meal of poison dart frogs, would drag the frogs to wipe the poison off their skin before eating.
This behavior was observed in the Royal Ground Snake, which was given potentially lethal frogs to eat.
Toxin resistance mechanisms span biological scales in the Royal Ground Snake
An accompanying video shows this behavior in action, although the study was limited by sample size.
Author's summary: Snakes exhibit intelligent behavior when eating poisonous frogs.
