Remembrance Day Events in Niagara-on-the-Lake

As Remembrance Day approaches, communities across Canada prepare to honour the soldiers who have served and continue to serve to protect the nation in times of war and peace. In Niagara-on-the-Lake, preparations are well underway to mark the solemn occasion.

Poppy Displays and Community Participation

Businesses throughout the town are offering poppies, with residents wearing them proudly on their coats and shirts. Poppy displays can be seen at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, the Historic Court House, the RiverBrink Art Museum, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 on King Street.

The museum’s poppy campaign began in October, and staff have arranged 75 poppy wreaths around the heritage district to honour fallen soldiers.

Legion Activities and Fundraising

According to Al Howse, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124, members have been hard at work preparing for this year’s commemorations.

“We accept donations at that time for our poppy trust fund to support veterans and their families,” said Howse.

The legion’s poppy drive started on October 11, with members collecting donations and distributing poppies around town. In total, poppies are available in about 200 businesses, and thousands have already been shared with community members.

Upcoming Commemorations

A series of remembrance events are scheduled in Niagara-on-the-Lake leading up to and on November 11, inviting residents to join in paying tribute to Canada’s veterans.
