Wane Makes Two Changes to England Squad for Final Australia Test

England head coach Shaun Wane has made two adjustments to his 19-man squad ahead of Saturday’s third and final Ashes Test against Australia. Hull KR winger Joe Burgess and Leeds Rhinos centre Harry Newman are expected to feature for the first time in this autumn’s Ashes series.

The pair step in for the injured Dom Young, who broke his foot in the 14–4 defeat of the second Test, and Wigan Warriors player Jake Wardle. Burgess, born in Wigan, is set for his first England appearance in ten years, having last played in the 2015 series win over New Zealand. Newman previously helped England secure a 2–0 series victory against Samoa in 2024.

Leigh Leopards forward Owen Trout and St Helens hooker Daryl Clark might also be recalled to the squad after serving as 18th and 19th men in the previous matchup. John Bateman remains unavailable due to an ankle injury sustained before the second Test.

With Australia having already clinched the Ashes with one game remaining, Wane emphasized that England is focused on ending the series strongly before a packed crowd at AMT Headingley on Saturday afternoon.

“Of course, we are disappointed not to be going into this final game with the opportunity to win the Ashes, but the goal now is to come away from the series with a victory,” said Wane. “We did a lot of good things last week, but ultimately, we need to be even better if we want to get a win this weekend.”
