Golfer Rory McIlroy has decided to attend the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony this December in Manchester, marking his first appearance at the event in ten years.
The Northern Irish golfer has enjoyed an exceptional 2025 season, highlighted by a dramatic victory at the Masters and a key role in Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph. Though the list of nominees for this year’s BBC SPOTY has not yet been revealed, McIlroy is widely expected to be shortlisted alongside Luke Littler, Chloe Kelly, and Lando Norris.
“Whenever I saw the results, I forgot I was nominated. So that's how much I think about it. It's not what it once was.”
McIlroy made this remark in January 2024, reflecting his indifference toward the award after previously being nominated.
“Yeah, the plan is to go. I have more chance of winning if I’m actually there and I recognise that with the audience the show attracts it could only be a good thing for the game. I suppose if I don’t win it this time, I never will.”
With this statement to Telegraph Sport, McIlroy confirmed his decision to attend the 2025 ceremony, acknowledging the potential positive impact his appearance could have for golf.
History has rarely favored golfers in the competition. Matt Fitzpatrick, for instance, was not shortlisted in 2022 despite winning the US Open. No golfer has claimed the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award since Sir Nick Faldo in 1989.
After years of skepticism, Rory McIlroy is returning to the BBC Sports Personality awards, signaling a renewed openness toward the event following a standout 2025 season.
