Hull KR CEO Explains World Club Challenge Venue Switch

Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin has explained why the upcoming World Club Challenge will be held at the home stadium of their city rivals, Hull FC. Despite the rivalry, Lakin emphasizes that the priority was always to keep the event in Hull.

Decision to Move Venue

The match, featuring Hull KR and the Brisbane Broncos, will take place at the MKM Stadium, which is normally home to Hull FC. This decision was driven primarily by financial and logistical considerations.

“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull.” – Paul Lakin

Financial and Fan Demand Factors

Lakin highlighted that hosting the match at the MKM Stadium meets financial needs and allows more fans to attend, including supporters of both teams.

“It was very quickly a no-brainer that we needed to move it. Financial reasons, supply and demand, it’s the biggest domestic game and you want as many people to experience it as possible.” – Paul Lakin

He also noted the players are eager to perform on the largest stage available.

Regarding Craven Park, he stated:

“For financial reasons, it wasn’t viable because we need to support the Broncos coming over here.” – Paul Lakin

Support from Rival Fans

Despite the venue being the home of their rivals, Lakin is confident Hull FC fans will enthusiastically support the event, creating a vibrant atmosphere for this world-class rugby league showdown.
