Dakota Fanning shared a charming story about a long-standing birthday tradition she has with Tom Cruise, which began when they worked together in the 2005 film War of the Worlds, where Fanning played his daughter.
While appearing on the Today show, the actress revealed that Cruise started sending her birthday presents when she turned 12, marking the beginning of a unique ritual. Knowing her love for shoes, Cruise began gifting her a new pair each year — a gesture he has continued for two decades.
“He sends me beautiful shoes, it’s a tradition that started, I think, on my 12th birthday,” Fanning said. “I loved shoes, and I had just started fitting into adult-sized shoes, so I was really excited. For that birthday, he gave me a pair, and he’s kept the tradition going for 20 years.”
During the interview, host Craig Melvin asked what kind of shoes Cruise chooses for her — “Louis Vuitton? Prada?” — to which Fanning laughed and simply replied, “Nice.”
