Dan Trachtenberg, known for revitalizing the Predator franchise, shared his ideas for a sequel to Waterworld during the premiere of Predator: Badlands.
Instead of a traditional film, Trachtenberg proposes transforming Waterworld into a video game. He envisions an open-world, third-person action-adventure game that would act as a sequel rather than a remake.
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game," Trachtenberg stated. "I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie."
Trachtenberg's idea aligns with previous successful adaptations, such as Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Released in 2009, it was set during Thanksgiving 1991, two years after Ghostbusters II, allowing players to experience a continuation of the story through gameplay rather than film.
Dan Trachtenberg proposes turning Waterworld into an open-world game as a fresh sequel idea, emphasizing interactive storytelling over traditional cinematic formats.
